In the long run, Europe has been a success model. Decades ago, it started with 6 members, today it consists of 27 ones. Europe has also been a peace model; Austria, in particular, has benefited from both: the most recent expansion of the European Union and the Euro. However, the current economic crisis has pinpointed construction design problems of Europe and led to major differences amongst the single member states.
There are two ways to solve the problem: 1) re-singularize the individual countries, 2) enhance the family of Europe.
In the 7th framework program (academic project for the Europe 2020 strategy), the Austrian Institute of Economic Research is commissioned to design a new growth path for Europe focusing on stronger social solidarity and ecological orientation. Karl Aiginger is coordinating this 4-year research project with 32 partners from nearly all European Union member countries and numerous scientific disciplines.
